Donkeys are very stoical, they never complain, but even they need a certain amount of care and attention. In our experience one acre of land is ideal for a pair of miniature donkeys, divided into smaller paddocks, to help manage weight and worm control and for land husbandry. Donkeys need a shelter in the paddock to get away from rain and wind in the winter (they are not waterproof), sun and flies in the summer. We also prefer to bring them in to a stable at night.  Fresh water is required every day, and you can only put so much manure on the roses so arrangements must be made for this!!

Feeding

Donkeys originate from arid areas of the world and consequently require a low protein, high fibre diet. Even on their one acre, too much grass can be a problem; a fat donkey is not a healthy donkey – do not kill with kindness. Plenty of good quality straw is always appreciated, with a little hay in the winter. Additional hard feed is not always necessary. However it is important that donkeys have the correct vitamins and minerals in a balanced diet.

The use of an electric fence helps to keep the donkey’s weight under control.

Worming

All donkeys require worming regularly, ideally every 8 weeks. It is also important that the droppings are collected from the paddock every day, to prevent re-infestation. Your vet should be happy to advise on a good worming programme.

Farrier

Donkeys’ feet will grow and grow, eventually curling up just like an Aladdin's slipper. This is very detrimental to the donkeys’ legs and there is no excuse for this to happen. Your farrier should trim the donkeys’ feet every 8-10 weeks.

Teeth

Donkeys need their teeth checking just like we do, so an annual check by your vet is advisable and he will take any remedial action.

Inoculations

It is important that all donkeys are vaccinated against Tetanus.

Passports

It is a legal requirement that all donkeys should have a passport – do not buy a donkey without one. A record of all vaccinations should come with the passport.
